Preparedness FAQs
1). Does the Red Cross offer free disaster preparedness training?
2). What are some other agencies that offer disaster-related preparedness or response information?
There are many organizations out there, but you can view some other agencies here.
3). How can my business help the Red Cross respond to a disaster?
If you are a business interested in donating large amounts of goods (e.g. a pallet of water), services or warehouse space, please contact Emily Sukman at esukman@oc-redcross.org
or (714) 481-5367.
4). What is the one thing I can to do prepare my home, office or family?
Unfortunately, there’s no single solution as true disaster preparedness requires a combination of supplies and planning. We suggest starting with the items listed in the Get a Kit section and viewing the entire Get Prepared section to determine what will be of greatest use to you.
5). How can I reconnect with family members following a disaster?
Have a meeting spot in place, but also have an out-of-state contact that you can call. You may want to incorporate text messaging into your disaster plans as in recent, minor earthquakes, the phone system has been clogged but text messages have gotten through. Another option is our Safe and Well list. We encourage you to become familiar with it now and also to let loved ones know you will be using it if a disaster occurs.
6). Do you offer any disaster preparedness information for the elderly or people with disabilities?
Monica Ruzich at (714) 481-5329 to schedule a free disaster preparedness class based on your specific needs.
7). Is there anything I can do to encourage my friends or neighbors to prepare?
Your enthusiasm will be a huge step. Also, one of our partners,
Ready OC has something called a Promise to Prepare. We encourage you to fill it out and prepare your neighborhood together. In addition, please remember that our disaster preparedness experts are happy to give free presentations to groups of 10 and 20 people.
8). I’m concerned about an elderly family member living alone. Do you have any advice?
The American Red Cross offers a service called Lifeline that allows seniors to retain their independence while also having an additional layer of security. For more information, please contact our Lifeline specialist at (714) 481-5352 or
tdurica@oc-redcross.org.
9). Do you offer products or programs geared to businesses?
10). What can I do to prepare a group of young people, such as a school class or a scout troop?
Take a look at our preparedness guides, but also consider contacting Monica Ruzich at (714) 481-5329 for a free disaster preparedness class taught by American Red Cross high school volunteers.
