Give Blood - Overview

Every year there is an increase in population, an increase in the aging population and more advances in medical technology. All contribute to a higher demand for blood and blood products. In Southern California, the American Red Cross must collect 1,500 units of blood each day to meet daily patient needs. If a disaster involving traumatic injuries were to occur, that number could easily double.

Donating blood is a simple process that saves more than four million American lives each year. Blood is always needed for treatment for trauma victims, patients being treated for cancer, patients with blood diseases such as sickle cell anemia or hemophilia, patients with severe burns, and surgery patients. There is no substitute for blood.
